Gollum. Tolkien is absolute genius to create such a dark, tormented, tragic creature and then have his readers pity him, want him to have goodness in his life. By matching him with Smeagul, and their conversations between the two sides are so compelling.
And of course Frodo. Frodo is the reader. He is the guy that everyone loves, wants to win, he is the guy next door thrust into this world. And he fails. Frodo is not able to destroy the ring; he fails his mission. He was corrupted. However, Tolkien shows us that even though Frodo failed his mission, he still is the hero and the savior of Middle Earth. It was not Frodo's strenght, or bravery, or brains, that saved him (although he had all those things), but his compassion. If he had killed Gollum then Gollum would not have accidently destroyed the ring. Both characters are so alike, and yet both the foils of each other. Really a beautiful masterpiece.

First it is important to mention that all the characters of "The Lord of the Rings" have endearing qualities to them.No wonder they have profoundly marked the collective imagination for more than half a century.
That being said, even though the cold unreal celestial demeanor of the elves are to be admire (i.e. Legolas, Arwen, Galadriel, Elrond), or the simple life-loving ways of the Hobbits (i.e. Sam, Merry, Pippin and Frodo), or the inherently human strengths and weaknesses of Men (i.e. Aragorn, Boromir, Faramir, Eowyn, Eomer) as well as Dwarves (i.e. Gimli), there is one character that effectively stand out from the bunch.
Maybe it is due to the fact that he always manage to find a way to save the day, when he not to busy smoking or coming back from the dead; or maybe it is because even though he effectively has the wisdom of an extremely knowledgeable old man without the jaded heart, or the slumping vigour; or maybe it's just that he's the most reoccurring narrator...
Whatever it is, all tip of hats and pipe-waving to everyone's favorite @®$€-kicking wizard debonair of a grandpa, Gandalf;
Since the whole defense against Mordor was masterminded and implemented essentially by him, could it be said that he is indeed the true savior of Middle-Earth? Possibly...
That and that resurrection trick might do it. Unless Aragorn is too upset to accept it...
:-)

I love Faramir the same way you do. He gives so much, and yet he never gets, he's never asking for something in return. Why do you like all the characters I do! I love Sam too, he's awesome. Though i am a sucker for Frodo though. Gimli! I love Gimli, small but taller than anyone in personality and confidence. Eowyn, tomboy, she's almost exactly like me, looks and personlity. Treebeard I just love because he's in his own world. Theoden I love, so loyal. And who can forget Merry and Pippin! Love those two!
Awe, I love all the LOTR characters they're all so awesome!

Im torn between a few too.....legolas, simply because the gorgeous orlando bloom plays him, but Aragorn is the hero of the film i reckon, and is pretty awesome i agree with you! But then Merry and Pippin are a great double act. Faramir is good too, but i did prefer Boromir played by sean bean in the first film because although he seemed to only want the ring, i think he was a good guy underneath and proved that in the end.
But after all that, I think that the best character is Aragorn.

Wow, I'd have to say my favorite is Gandalf. He's incredibly complex and in depth as a character. Whenever you think you've got him figured out, he throws something else at you that makes you rethink your entire perception of him. He's soft as a feather and hard as steel. He's Incredibly wise, but down to earth and sometimes simple. He's witty and intelligent. Many times in the book his quips had me giggling to myself (usually in a crowded room, LOL). On top of all of that, every time Gandalf speaks in the book, I hear my father's booming voice bringing gandalf to life. He reminds me a great deal of my father and that's not a bad thing.
BTW - When was Frodo a jerk to sam?? That never happened in the book?? Or were you thinking strictly movies?

tie between Pippin and Sam.
Sam is such a loving character. I love how he is able to be so vulnerable and yet very strong. The relationship between him and Frodo is something that cannont be described.
On the other hand Pippin leaves us with such happiness and giddyness. His comic relief adds that special something to the whole story.
