They are lower gears. I used mine in the snow. Keeps me from going too fast, will shift down when releasing the gas without having to use brakes.

The 1 and 2 restrict the transmission to operate in those gears. When the car is in drive (D), the engine picks the best gear based on your speed, how much throttle you're giving it, and the load on the engine. It usually picks this for maximum fuel economy.

However, when you're descending a mountain, if you use your brakes all the way down, they will overheat and stop functioning. In this case, you want to restrict the transmission to gear 1 or 2, and use engine braking to keep the car's speed low. That will conserve your brakes.

Second (2 or S) – This mode limits the transmission to the first two gears, or more commonly locks the transmission in second gear. This can be used to drive in adverse conditions such as snow and ice, as well as climbing or going down hills in the winter time.

First (1 or L) – This mode locks the transmission in first gear only. It will not accelerate through any gear range. This, like second, can be used during the winter season, or towing.
