When I was young my superstitious grandmother always told me to always "go out the way you came in" meaning to always leave a room, a house or apartment by the same door through which you entered. This was reference in "Duplex" when Mrs. Connelly told the young couple to exit through the way they entered because "We Irish have a belief about going out the way you came in, it's something to do with death". I've wondered what the actual meaning of the superstition is. Does anyone know?

I've always heard that it's just plain and simple bad luck to exit from a different door

I've always heard that it's means that you take with you what you brought. Meaning bad energy, death, illness, and everything else isn't left with the person that you just visited. It probably stems from the fact that in some legends the hero escaped nasty supernatural forces by leaving another way.

Oh lighten up Debbie. Sounds like you're superstitious about talking about superstition.

That's funny though, when I was a kid we had a friend who'se practice was the opposite--she always made sure to leave from a different door!

It means what it says. If you're a good natured person when you first enter this world, be that for the rest of your life and die a good natured person. It benefits everyone.
