it really depends on the artist...........some of them I can just through on a cd and listen to it from start to finish, others I am just happy with a greatest hits......

If I am really into the band I am an album person. Greatest Hits albums are good for people who only like the hits they have heard on the radio and are usually a contractual obligation for the artist to their record company to shift more units. I don't really like the "greatest hits" albums.
Some great album artists:
Billy Joel
David Bowie
Nine Inch Nails
Bruce Springsteen
Tom Waits
Frank Zappa
The Cure
Steve Vai
Dream Theater
There are many more...
EDIT: Sorry, I have to add that the statement made by the guy above me is really irritating. I hate this downloading crap. Call me old fashioned but I still love going CD shopping!
Go out and buy the dam CD. Get off your @ss and go to the store before they are all gone. I certainly DO NOT crumble to the "ease" of downloading, that is for lazy, apathetic people who do not really care about music!

I prefer albums. There's nothing better than a good album with a good variety of songs - some fast tempo, medium tempo, and slow songs. There's an artistry to putting together and pacing a good album.
There are a very few, really strong songs that I will listen to as a single, without hearing the rest of the album. But for the most part, I prefer albums.

I am and will always be an album person. There's nothing I love more than getting my hands on a new album and listening to it over and over again from beginning to end. Most recently I've been digging the new Pumpkins, White Stripes and a lesser known band called The Black Keys.
And for Lovnrckts - Since I use a legal music service, Yahoo Music to go, I download the entire album in one click so I can listen to the whole thing. You can have entire albums digitally you know.

I'm also more of an album person. I'll rarely buy a CD if it's not solid all the way through. I can enjoy a lot of "greatest hits" albums from classic rock artists. A lot of them had great hits but the albums as a whole would be weak.

Album person, most of the bands I listen to make concept albums anyway. When you listen to one song... it's just a song. But when you listen to a whole album, a whole atmosphere is created and you get in a mood and don't leave till the very end.

I generally go more for the album. I used to go gaga for concept albums. The only greatest hits I buy are bands I know I don't want to waste a lot of time with, like Journey or Billy Idol. I'll listen to just about any concept album, whether it's hyper-prog or hip hop.

Album.... but I've also got about 50 CDs are so made up of one off songs that appealed to me for whatever reason. Most of them are from the 50s-70s.

Well first I buy the single off the album on iTunes. If I buy another one, I'll check out the album and if I like it, I'll consider buying it, and if it's good enough I'll buy it. But if it's like, a one-hit-wonder (like Daniel Powter; Bad Day) I'll only buy the single and not the album because I only want the single.
