I really do not trust mechanics here in Detroit,MI. (past expierence) When has there ever been a oil change with no oil/ $120 full tune up with the same air filter??? Those ar ejust a few problems I have encountered with this scam artist here in Detroit,MI. My question is do I have the right to watch the mechanic work on my vehicle inside the garage area to make sure he is actually changing out the right parts????

No, most shops will not let you into their shop for insurance and liability reasons. Some shops are starting to install cameras in the service bays so you can watch from the waiting area or on the internet but most haven't got there yet. If you don't trust this guy that much you would be better off to find a reputable shop you can trust.

Yes, a trust worthy mechanic is very hard to find. If you have a good one, don't hesitate to share with everybody.

Usually shops will not allow customer to go into the work area because of liability and insurance issue.

But here is something that I do, I always wait right behind my vehicle outside of the garage area and just watch the mechanic work.

Common sense is that when they are replacing something, they need to take it out. The time to put in new parts should be the same if not greater than the time to remove.

And always, always, ask to see the old part that they remove. If they claim the part is bad, ask them to explain and show you the defective area.

Good Luck. Don't forget to share info on good mechanics.

I worked at a pretty honest auto shop and we allowed customers into the bay but only to show them what needed to be repaired. The bay can be a dangerous place and I doubt most shops would allow a customer to remain there for long. I suggest you ask for your old parts before they begin work. Also, if you mistrust, mark the parts to be replaced before you drop off your car(like with nail polish or something). Ask around, see if anybody you know has a mechanic they trust beyond a shadow of a doubt. fellow detroiter in california
