Absolutely. Sadly, the welfare system in the U.S. is grossly misused and abused. I fear that those who sincerely need it in the near future may be turned down. The idea of the system from my understanding, is to help financially until one can provide for himself/herself. It is also for displaced workers who are searching for jobs in the interim. And yes, training is offered to obtain skills and find work, but this is not mandatory(?)!

The hang up there is that women on welfare usually play the "child care" card. "I can't afford the day care expenses!" Most people on welfare don't want to work because of some other problem. (That's a whole other psychology class.) Think about this: Why don't you see very many men on welfare?
Ask your grandparents about the W.P.A. (Works Progress Authority) It was a program set up by the government during the depression. Young men would go to a camp and live in dorms while they worked building roads, bridges, and dams. They got housed, fed, and a paycheck. They got a tiny piece of it at the time, but the remainder got sent home to the family. This was back in the day when men actually cared about raising the children they had fathered.

Every one who is physically able should have to make some kind of a positive contribution to society whether it be picking up trash or sweeping the streets. Welfare is an entitlement program. Ok, if the taxpayers are going to foot the bill, then how about those that lean on the taxpayers pull their share of the load too. Prisoners should have to earn their keep. The States spend millions on road repair etc. Let's utilize that muscle strength to save money and get the job done. Road repair is not rocket science. The taxpayers spend in excess of $20,000.00 per year per prisoner to keep them locked up contributing nothing. Look at the people that are on disability. I personally know 10 people in my immediate circle who are on disability who are out there having fun, doing what ever they want and are no more disabled than I am. They could work. I think that if a person on disability can do a job of any kind, they should have to work rather than sit around and collect a paycheck every month. We should use the obvious resources we have available to keep our country clean, and in good repair. We are already paying millions for them to sit and do nothing.

yes people should work for what they get wheather it is welfare or ??? even the bible says "a man will earn his bread from the sweat of his brow" yet we see these people f you want to call them people stay on welfare generation after generation, why, simple they are a lazy bunch of free loaders, most prostitute and or sell drugs on the side, and I have seen men who shack up with a woman and get welfare while he is working and making in many instances more than the average guy, but, he can drive a really nice sports car live in a luxury sitting and enjoy all of the things the average working people can't afford, and our welfare workers will over look these things, makes me wonder if some one is getting a kick back , or is it Job security?I have seen people on welfare like the Woman in Los Angles who was getting I believe 12 welfare checks every month for several years, she wore mink coats, owned several rentals etc and drove a new Cadillac,
YES, I am inclined to believe the welfare system is to free for the people and they damned sure should haft to do some work for their check, and if they did public works it should give some relief to the hard working tax payer who is taxed to the point he is no more than a slave to our system,
crabby blind guy , you have been on welfare so long you think it is a privdlige owed to you, if some one wants togo to school and gain a education first they should have gone as children but since they didn't let them go to school and if they are serious and learn to produce then fine but, when the course is finished so would their welfare benifits, but, if they don't attend clases or try, then kick them off welfare and out of the class, why should some lazy bum live off of the hard working people who do produce it would also improve our econemy,

That is an excellent idea! They could also plant flowers around the city, run toy drives at Chrsitmas (or coat and canned food drives). open a soup kitchen. If they are going to take from the tax payers, mine as well give back to the community!
And the response about a urine test is also great! People should not be allowed welfare if they test positive for illegal drugs. The disabled are the only ones with an excuse not to work! And Medicaid should follow the same guidelines.

ABSOLUTELY NOT. If they work for the city, they will never have time to look of a real job. Instead, the city should run a day care center for these people. Some of the people who want to work in childcare can work there for free to get experience. This service would then free the other people to look for work or go to school. Everyone on welfare should have to account for at least 8 hours of his or her day for 5 days a week. If they aren't looking for work or going to school, they don't get any money.

Here's a better idea--make real job training programs available, along with daycare so welfare recipiants can GO to school.
Thenthey'll be able to get off welfare and support themselves.
Or, at the least, remove the penalties builtinto the system that cuts off assistance if they try to do anything to help themselves. Most of them are willing to work--but if they try to get a part time job to start getting ontheir feet--the assistance gets cut off. And if they have a kid to feed, what do they do-?
But its so much easier for the middle-class bigots to make self-righteous statments about how superior they are--THEIR parents paid for themto go to school so they could get a decent job, without any effort on their part--and they think that makes them some kind of moral judge of evryone else.
They make me puke.
People on welfare are NOT the "lazy bums" the right-wing bigots lavel them as. In fact the largest category are whte women with children whos husbands have divorced them (NOTE: the highest divorce rates are among theright-wing).

I have worked with people who are paralysed from the neck down and they are able to run businesses. I have known people who have collected for 40 years because of a strained back. Where are these doctors who should be reevaluating these patients. And yes they should work a certain number of hours

The people who arent working should be forsed to work while on welfare. There are people out there who are working and need a little tempory help to get them on their feet until they are able to advance in their careers.

Usually the point of welfare is to provide income that the person can't work for. This could be because they already work 2 or more jobs, have a disability, or other hardships. So you would actually be making their situation worse by making them work for the welfare.
