Was 14-15, the first babysitting job. Four children in a large house with steps. They were ages 6,4,3 and newborn. I was smart enough to call my foster mother (in her 60's) and ask for advice, when one of the younger children fell down the uncarpeted steps. The parents trusted me, I guess because they had seen I had showed responsibility or someone recommended me, I never found out how, but they had left me a phone # for an emergency, so after I did as the foster mother recommended, I called the parents to tell them what happened. I babysat for them for another 1 1/2 years until they moved. They paid $2.50 and hour, in the 60's, that was good pay for a poor girl.

Waldenbooks was my first "real" job.
I had a job before that at the Great American Chocolate Chip Cookie Company for about 4 hours, but once the manager wanted me to clean out the "grease trap" below the sink I got upset and accidentally threw a cookie sheet at her head. It accidentally hit her in the face and covered her with cookie dough (macadamia nut crunch) and she accidentally cried. Then she inadvertantly called the district manager and I was fired instantly. It's okay because that job was stupid. Who weighs cookies?
Love,
Snag

Sales girl at a large department store. The dress departments worked on commission which had not been explained to me. Each time I got a huge sale, the older women would talk me out of it saying stuff like really need this sale because the daughter was starting school, or she promised her aunt a cash loan, etc. After Christmas, the manager said he would have kept me on if my commissions hadn't have been so low. I was too meek to speak up.

I was a bundle girl at a supermarket. Thats what they used to call baggers..lol.. We put the groceries in the bags and then carried them out to the customers cars and put them in the car! A lot different than today! We didnt have plastic bags yet so used paper all the time. Once in a while we had little plastic bags for the ice cream but ran out a lot.

I went to work at 13 as a bus girl in a busy restaurant and started on Valentines Day. I learned to work that night!! Didn't leave there until 5am the next morning. It was EXHILARATING and I've been in the service industry ever since! :-)
