New figures out today suggest that 24 Hour Alcohol availability has been responsible in the massive surge in violent crimes committed within the UK. Quite frankly what did you expect? I never thought it would work in the first place, it was always going to make things worse. People it would seem have problems enough holding their drink without making the sale of it non stop. People at the time said it wouldn't work, myself included and it would appear our words have been bourne out. The question I'm asking I suppose is do you agree that it is and always was a bad idea to give premises 24 hour licences to sell alcohol, as the increase in violent crime was the predicted and now proven outcome and should the government now U-turn and revoke the 24 hour licences and put things back to something more reasonable?

I agree with your point and thought myself that it was a bad idea when it was in the pipeline of being introduced. I only think that it is a bad idea in Britain though. At the moment I live in Japan and here it is possible to drink in different establishments 24 hours a day. There isn't a problem with it though due to people being passive and having a sense of self control. You see the occasional guy spewing at 7:00 in the morning but there is no real grief there. In Britain it is a different kettle of fish though as people seem to lack control. The problem with the government is that they ignore all social factors and come up with the reasoning 'This country successfully did it. So can we'. Good in theory but not in practise. Countries like Japan don't have hoodies, rebellious youths (well, not many), high crime rates and confrontations in the streets. If Britain wants to copy the rest of the world it needs to sort out the problems that it has first. I even think that the smoking ban will eventually cause problems as the minor details haven't been sorted out. I'm sure I'll get some thumbs down for this but it is how I see the situation.

No I think you are not hitting the right button in spite of the apparent evidence. The swill it down system should be restricted, even though it is a habit in northern Europe. What should be encouraged is drinking with food. This encourages mixed age groups which tend to make for a steadier hand on the drinking. Sadly many people in fairness not just the young equate getting drunk with having a good time. It is a social matter not a law making one. Most of the trouble takes place outside nigh clubs rather than pubs and it is here that restrictions must be applied

Jon can metabolize only a certain amount of alcohol per hour, regardless of the amount consumed. The rate of alcohol metabolism depends, in part, on the amount of enzymes in the liver, which varies among individuals and appears to have genetic determinants. In general, after the consumption of one 12-oz beer or 1-oz shot, the AMOUNT of alcohol in the drinker's blood (blood alcohol concentration or BAC) peaks within 30 to 45 minutes BEFORE it begins to exit. In other words, it is absorbed much quicker than it is metabolized. (ex: Four beers take 6-7 hours to metabolize) 50 beers over 24 hours will not only exceed the legal limit but will definitely exceed toxic BAC levels. If he decides to try this "stunt" please inform the people who make the "Darwin Awards" They will be the only ones who will make money getting others laughing that Jon is dead....

you are 100% right!! i am a recovered alcoholic and having alcohol available 24 hours a day is freaking insane! and irresponsible by the government and they need to reverse policies! like NOW!! ALCOHOL HAS BEEN PROVEN TO INCREASE CRIME, LIKE YOU SAID! and it contributes to diseases like cirrrhosis of liver and other ailments! and drinking and driving fatalities will increase ten fold!! with that stupid ******* policy!! it is just plain greed!! that drives the government and others to want more money off taxes!!
