She has had her period for a looonnnnggg time now.
Just tell her. It is a special moment between mothers & daughters. There is no shame.
She will help you deal with it. You do not have to go through it alone.

read link below about how to tell her:

You can still get in the water. Use tampons. They are a little uncomfortable at first but you get used to them really quickly. Just make sure you change often, especially after getting out of the water.

As for telling your mom, if you guys have an okay relationship, just tell her. She's probably been expecting this anyway.

First of all , all girls go through this[even your mom] It is a natural part of life. You need to tell your mom. She will help you decide what is the best decision to make. It doesn't hurt to go in the water but you need to be prepared . it is ok to try a sport type of tampon. Your mom is the best person to give you advice . Congratulations by the way, on becoming a young woman!

Welcome to womanhood!

Tell our mom right away, she needs to be a part of this with you, and tell her what has happened to her baby girl. Since you just started, it may not be a good idea to begin using tampons right away, it may be very uncomfortable, and you have plenty of time yet to practice using them. If you choose to use a tampon, get the OB tampons, they are small, have no applicators, and may be relatively comfortable for you; this way, you can enjoy the water sports like you want to - just be sure to change it at least every 6-8 hours.

I have a daughter who will be in your position in a few years. I pray that when she starts she will come right to me - I will calm her down, answer her questions and show her what to use and how to use it. It's easy to forget how much your parents love you and want to be there for you during all the moments in your life - the big ones and the small ones. Go to your Mom, tell her what's happening and ask for her help. Oh - you can go in the water - your Mom will tell you how. Good luck!

The best thing to do to start the conversation is a question about your period, and then say, "because I got my period, and I was wondering" Easy way to start it. Your mom will most likely be very proud, and you can always use a tampon... unless your like me, and too afraid to.

Say, "mom I just got my period".
If you are going to go swimming you have to wear a tampon. Don't worry. Your body is physically ready for them as soon as you get your first period.

Well it would be easier to have a private place to talk to her, grit your teeth and just spit it out!
She should be able to understand that its kindof embaressing to talk about.
You should also still be able to go in the water, unless maybe its salt water you're talking about. But with the right protection like tampons etc you should be ok.

Just get her alone to tell her.
When I got mine my mother was at work, and I ended up calling her crying.
She'll understand, I promise.
You'd probably bemore comfortable just her and you, just say "Mom, I need to tell you something, can you come here?"
She'll go, and just sorta tell her.
It won't be that bad.
