Yes, people can play the political game, and tell other people what they want to hear, and act subservient to get what they really want. But that's deception and illusion,
Buddha advocated truth above all things, including truth above this ridiculous concept we call political correctness. So, while Buddha did say to know your place in the world, what he meant was to understand how the world is affected by you and understand how you are affected by the world.
But yes, I will grant that so many people are so hung up on social formalities and so opposed to honest discussion that speaking the truth at all times is socially fatal. Which is sad that we live in a world where deception and lies in the name of politeness are valued above truth and honesty.

Knowledge is power but so is being open minded and showing respect for other peoples beleifs and experiances. Knowing what , how , tone, and time are key's to all social interaction no matter how high or low the society.
