They reckon that all fertalised eggs are girls until 14 weeks and then if they are destined to change thats when it happens but I dont know how correct this is. Generally the 17-22 week mark is the best to see via ultrasound what a baby is but this depends on what position the baby is in and other factors.

The gender is determined by the sex chromosome contained in the sperm that goes to conception.

The gender can be detected 5 days after conception in the case of in-vitro fertilization (test-tube babies) by doing something called pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD).

Ultrasound cannot detect fetal gender until close to 16 weeks gestation.

Prenatal testing of the genetic material through CVS or amniocentesis can detect gender as early as 11 weeks gestation, but these tests have a risk for miscarriage and are not generally performed just for this purpose.

The gender of a child is determined at fertilization - there are male and female sperm.

the sex of a baby depends on the sperm. they have an at home test that can tell the sex of a baby from 6 weeks by taking a sample of blood but its not cheap its probably about £200, but more relaible than a scan at 20 weeks. you can get tests done that take a sample of the fluid surrounding the baby in the womb to tell the babies sex as the fluid surrounding the baby as the same chromosones as the baby.

Sex is determined by if the sperm donates an x or y chromosome to the whole process- but I don't think there is any way to 'make' it happen one way or another- even people having IVF can't 'choose' the sex of their baby- yet.
