Charlotte and Cin_ann are both on track. It is either the Japanese beetle or a Deer which will both strip a rose clean. Your rose is not dead though and will re-foliate. There is one other possibility and that is a fungus called Black Spot that can defoliate a rose bush as well. Now it is up to you to find the culprit. Look around the bushes and see if there are rose leaves that are covered with black spots or entirely black littering the site. If so then it is probably black spot. If it is black spot you can purchase a fungicide for the problem. If the leaves are completely gone then it's the beetle or deer. If the Japanese beetle then hand pick them and throw them in a pail of soapy water. If Deer then get deer repellent. Good luck

Do you have deer in the area ?? Those buggers are very sneaky and come in after dark. They have eaten lots of my rose blossoms as well as other blossoms such as Lilies, tulips, etc.

I poked a hole in my leftover bar soap and put a string through the soap and hung some on my plant stems.
You could also move the rose bushes to a protected area (with a fence) but need to be extremely careful with the root system...and give it plenty of water.

Probably it was Japanese beetles. They will chew off all the leaves and buds. use a spray on them next year.
