what are my rights?
the previous manager apperantly was termintated for extortion

Call Legal Aid; they assist in landlord-tenant disputes.

If you paid with a personal check your OK.
If the old manager gave you a receipt the new manager should have a copy of that receipt in the receipt book.

Its up to them to prove its forged. If they terminated this person for extortion, embezzlement etc. thenits their problem. He was acting as their agent. They need to contact their insurance agency.

show previous rent receipts... if they all match-
proof of payment [credit card statement,check stub,etc] is good.
