It's recommened to just feed them milk until about 6 months if you are breast feeding. Also, you don't have to qualify on WIC to go to their classes. They have REALLY good information about food and nutrition for you and your baby as they grow. Good luck!

Babies only need breastmilk for the first 6 months of their lives.
After that, a cereal, like rice, oatmeal with or without fruit.
the AAP recommends that babies be breastfed exclusively for about the first 6 months. Following the introduction of solid foods, breastfeeding should continue through the first year of life and beyond, if desired.
Water, juice, and other foods are usually unnecessary during a baby's first 6 months. Breast milk or formula provides everything babies need nutritionally until they start eating solid foods.
Remember, milk is food, not just a drink. That's because even though the milk is liquid, it has protein in it.
Remember, all the nutrients in his milk are still sufficient for his growth.
The basic principle behind introducing solids is to introduce only one new ingredient at a time and to give it for at least 3 days before trying something else new. That way if a baby has a problem with a food you can more easily figure out which food. The second principle of introducing new foods is to introduce foods that might cause allergic reactions later. The reason for this is that as the intestines mature the intestines only absorb small molecules.

Traditionally, women began giving cereal at 6 weeks, sometimes younger. Recent research has shown that this is not a good thing because the cereal does not contain all the nutrients the child needs. In formula or breast milk, each calorie is packed with loads of different stuff, but cereal only contains a handful of these things.
There is no reason nutritionally to give your child anything more then breast milk or formula before 6 months. I breastfed for 5 months, then introduced cereal. At 6 months we started the fruits and veggies.

You will get a different answer to this question every time you ask it, because it really has to do with each baby. Factors to consider are your baby's weight and size, whether your baby is being fulfilled by just milk, and if your baby's stomach can handle other things. I have three children and each was different. My first had stomach problems and couldn't handle food early. My second was eating all baby foods by six months. My third would eat no baby foods only mashed adult food. You should always start with cereal but how quickly they progress from there depends on the child.

I started giving my daughter very watered-down rice cereal at 5 months because she was no longer taking her usual long naps and seemed to not be full after breastfeeding. After a few weeks, I made the rice cereal a tiny bit thicker. Baby's tummies are sensitive so don't over do it. After a while later, I added bananas and so on. Check with your baby's pediatrician if you want to make sure.

My doctor said nothing but formula or breastmilk the first 6 months if not the first 12....I didn't listen. I started feeding my daughter a little rice cereal before feedings 3 times a day at about 3 months old. She wasn't satisfied with just milk, or water. Do what you think is best, within reason. If your baby seems full after bottles, don't worry about food, if not, then consider it.

At 6 months I started my son on mashed avocado, but he didn't take to it well. He just was not interested in solid foods. He is now 8 months and he is beginning to take to solids better. He will eat zucchini, avocado, and nectarines. I skipped rice cereal because it is fortified with iron, which can mess with the way the body naturally absorbs iron from foods.

my exclusively breastfed baby was not being satisfied with just breastmilk at 4 months, so my doctor said it would be okay to introduce rice cereal, single grain. Shortly after, 5 months my son wanted to eat the food i was eating, so I would give him small tastes of 1st foods then at 6 months I started making it part of his diet. He loves it! I started with fruits then veggies, but now he wants all veggies.
I still give him breastmilk.
