I have a friend who is a big time gamer and came up with a game controller for Halo that many ppl find to be really good and want. He made a post about finding ppl to help him make the controllers but since Im more into law and history than games I recommended that he get a patent on the controller first before he made orders for ppl so that no one could steal his idea. His really good with technology and I think he should put a patent on his creations so that no one can take credit for what he does. He's sending me the info about it but for anyone out there who knows the law or is a professional, what do you think he should do?

Absolutely. He needs to have some protection of his intelectual property before he starts sending this to other people.

There are also some invention companies that help you patent and market ideas to production companies. From what I understand they can take a big chunk out of your earnings though.

Be prepared to spend thousands of dollars on lawyers to get a patent. Also, the process takes time and I do believe you have to have a working prototype.

Patents are ONLY good if the product is stolen

If he has the ability to make the device

Document and
Copyright everything

make it and sell it and if someone steals it

You have just as good as chance of winning as If you had a patent
