Wow, it's really surprising how many people do not know what they're talking about.
First of all though, the terminology is audition. A tryout is for baseball or something like that...
OK, backstage is a good start, but honestly you're not going to find a lot of tv stuff there. It's still a very good place to start because obviously you don't have an agent. Sorry to tell you that if you want to get on tv without an agent your only chance would be reality tv or a non-union web show most likely. You can do student films, non union independent films and lots of other projects, but all the shows you watch and love on tv are union therefore you need an agent to get an audition.
Another option would be actorsaccess.com. They'll have similar listings as backstage, but I've found that they have substantially more options when it comes to films especially.
It sounds like you have little or no experience. My suggestion would be to get into acting classes before you do anything. I think you need to find out what you're in for and see if you're really ready for it.
good luck

Since most TV shows film in Los Angeles, you'll find 99% of TV auditions in LA.
If you're in the area, you should subscribe to Backstage West, an Actor's magazine that has every acting opportunity in SoCal.

A lot of times if you go to the website of the TV channel that has the show, they will have a section where you can go apply to be on a show. I've searched on Google before and found tons of sites that take you to reality shows and also let you apply to be on one. For example, go to ABC.com and then go to a listing of their upcoming shows or shows they are looking for participants for and there you will find a printable application that you fill out and send in with a video of yourself. It's quite easy! Hope that helps....

Online. Check the site of the TV station hosting the show, or the shows site itself...

Most TV stations will have websites that list when shows are recorded and whether or not public is invited.
