It's not a good idea, as they are wild animals and don't thrive in captivity. If you have a suitable garden, headgehogs will naturally find you.

Wild Hedgehogs For Sale

If you are in the UK then keeping wild European Hedgehogs as pets is illegal. You can keep African Pygmy Hedgehogs though-I have 1.

They are a different species to the wild ones and as the name suggests much smaller. They are originally from North Africa and the Middle East. They can get really tame and will flatten their spikes down so you can stroke them.

They are quite easy to keep as pets but they are not cheap-a just weaned baby is around £150.

Wild European hedgehogs will visit your garden but you have no guarantee they will stay there no matter how much you feed them. They are unlikely to ever get tame and they carry LOADS of fleas.Feed the wild ones either dried or wet cat food or the wild Hedgehog food that some garden centres sell.

Do you want a Wild Hedgehog for your garden or a domesticated pet?

There is a HUGE difference between the two. Let me know, as it is illegal in the UK to capture and keep a Hedgehoig in captivity without good reason ; i.e- as a pet. Hedgehogs are only to be captured by Wildlife Carers for the benefit of the Hedgehog itself; if it has an injury.etc.

I used to have an african pygmy hedgehog. His name was Oscar. He died a few months ago (in April I think).

They are expensive to buy (£100 roughly) but very, very cheap to look after.

By the way..... pet hedgehogs cannot live in gardens!! They come from Africa so need a warm climate!

They are really good pets!! Well Oscar was!!!!!

I live about 2 hours from London (I'm in Cambridgeshire). I know breeders of African Pygmy hedgehogs in/NEAR London - here are some of them:

Most large gardens have hedgehogs and if you go out when it's dark, listen for their snuffling sounds. It is legal to have them as a pet but they are crawling with lice, fleas and tics. They like to roam, so are best left alone but will call regularly for a bowl of cat food.!

no. is the short answer. youcannot keep a wild animal as a pet.

however; hogs get injured all the time, and hedgehog hospitals do need to rehome hogs who cant survive in the wild, mainly coz theyre blind.

but hogs use a unique mapping sense, and it didnt take any of ours long to find their way out of the undergrowth and down to the food.

and hogs eat almost anything... BUT NO MILK...

Hedgehogs are wild animals and, like most wild animals, are generally covered with fleas. However if you still want one ask friends living in the country to keep their eyes open for one. Leaving out a saucer full of cat food (not milk) can attract them and will keep them in your garden.
