I signed up at work to fill a backpack up for back to school supplies for a poor 13 year old girl. I would like to get some ideas (apart from the usual school supplies) about what she might want or need or have interests in.

I thought maybe a diary might be nice to have. Any thing else?

Is Hannah Montana stuff too young for a 13 year old?

Should I buy a plain pink backpack or something that has pictures all over it?

Help! I'm not even 30 years old yet, and I already forget what it's like to be a 13 year old!

Thanks for your suggestions, it's all for charity!

I don't know if I'd get a pink backpack - not all girls like pink and it might not be 'cool' to walk around as a teenager with the color. stick with black or something like red. those tend to be cool and safe colors. and no pictures.

A diary would be cool but it does depend on the girl - i had one at 13 but never used it. try cute little noteboks instead - those are way cool- and try going to a little accessory shop like Claires and add a few bracelets, hair clips and/or necklaces. Avoid earrings just in case the ears aren't pierced.

Just try your best. I'm 29, and I'm not sure about the Hannah Montana thing, although my 2 year old watches her. I would say stick with simple colors and designs but not specific characters. Besides the usual pencils, paper, etc., add some lip gloss and nail polish. What girl doesn't like that and if she's poor, I'm sure she'll appreciate it even more. That's great what you're doing! Have fun!

At 13 you are almost a high schooler but not quite yet. Skip the backpack with things all over it and get a plain solid color one. Jansport has some nice simple ones. Hannah Montanta I am pretty sure is too young for a 13 yr old (at least she will probably pretend not to like it anymore :0) ), but the diary sounds nice. You know the usual:
-pens
-pencils
-calculator
-ruler
-markers or crayons
Ooh and drawing pad might be nice. She may like art and that is something that she can do without spending much money. Notebooks of course. Maybe a set of pastels or something to color and draw with. You could always throw in a CD or something although it has nothing ot do with school. One of those NOW bla blah ones since htey have big hits on it and she's bound to like some of it. I don't know, just a few ideas :)

I'm a 13 y/o girl so i hope this helps:

A diary is a great thing to have, and put a pretty pen to go w/ it. Try a craft kit like beading stuff. Books would be good too. "The Outcast of 19 Shcyler Place", "So B. It" , and "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" are some of my favorites. A piece of jewlrey would be a nice little something extra

i know a lot of girls at my middle school that like Hannah Montana stuff, (Hannah Montana was even voted as Fav. TV Show), but i wouldn't take that chance.

Jansport backpacks w/ designs on them are really popular, but they can be on the expensive side, and they are kind of small. Plain is okay, but i personally like the designs.

Well I'm 12 and a half and I still love Hannah Montana! Maybe you could get her a plain pink backpack but then get her stuff like buttons and stickers to decorate it with. Claires has some really cute stuff, jewlery and school supplys, accesorys too! Maybe a giftcard? Maybe a cute lunch box would be nice and a diary might be cool too. I think that its really nice what you're doing for this poor girl. Good Luck and I hope I helped!

It is such a nice thing for you to do. Her are some things i suggest to put in her backpack.

Don't get any Hannah Montana Stuff it is too young for a 13 year old.

Get a plain pink solder backpack
Gum
Journal
Snacks: pretzels, granola bars, fruit snacks, etc.
Normal school supplies
Day planner
Book: sisterhood of the traveling pants (optional)
Calculator

Good Luck! Also some stores have suggestion papers on what to buy for certain ages groups. You may want to buy some of the things on the list for her age.

My best friend carried a Bratz backpack our senior year in high school and I carried a Nike bag. So on that its whatever you want just don't do pink just cause she's a girl. I do suggest something to write in and maybe a few books. You can even toss in a few personal hygenine items.

Schools don't have the right to search you ever, and minors can not consent to a strip search. I hope this girl gets millions.

that's an awesome thing you're doing. :) hannah montana is way too young. you don't know what kind of patterns this girl will like, right? if it's not specifically to her, but she'll choose from a lot of backpacks, then choose a pattern or color that you like but that you'll also think a 13 year old will. if it goes specifically to her, and it's already determined that your pack will go straight to her specifically, then choose a plainer one, cuz you never know. pink, purple, blue, or black are good all-around colors. if you wanted to include a nice touch maybe get cool school supplies, like folders and binders and notebooks with neat colors and patterns, and cool pencils and smiley-face erasers. cool little details like that. that will show her you cared a lot about the details. and you could hide neat little stuff in the pouches and pockets of the backpack, like a superball or a mini notebook or something.
