okay. my sisters wedding is coming up and they have a bar in the basement of the house that they are going to get. for one of their presents i wanted to make bar glasses (long island, wine and beer mugs) with their names or a message on them. I am going to make a stencel of the design but what is the best paint to use? it has to be water proof, able to stand up to the wear and tear of use and be okay in a dishwasher.

thanks for your help!

I would also recommend etching your design on the glasses. You can draw your design on white contact paper. Apply this to the glass ( making sure it is adhered completely ) Cut out the design using an exacto knife. In the area where you removed the contact, liberally apply the etching cream. Wait 2 minutes ( check the bottle to make sure I'm right ) and rinse off. Remove the stencil and you are done. You can also buy ready made wedding design stencils to use with the cream. If you can't find the cream ans stencils in your craft store, you can order from the site I provided. A 3oz. bottle of the cream costs $5.85. I've done this many times and have always gotten good results.
http://www.dickblick.com ( when you get there do a search for Armor Etch or etching cream )

I would suggest etching something into the glass rather than painting on it. The paint would chip off eventually, whereas the etching would leave a more permanent design. Etching is very easy and instructional kits can be purchased for a modest price from Lewiscraft or Michael's as well as some of the department stores that have larger craft departments.

Delta Air-Dry PermEnamel Paint is the only air-dry paint that bonds to glass (or ceramic) for a lasting and durable (dishwasher/oven/microwave-safe) finish.

You can also use Lazertran Waterslide decals. You can print on them using your computer. Once attached to the glasses, they can be cured and will also provide a sturdy waterproof finish.

you like a 2-area epoxy resin coating, no longer polyurethane or varnish, which yellows and cracks. It takes some skill to prepare it nicely, yet once you examine the instructions and are careful it particularly is totally do-in a position on your first attempt. it quite is the stuff that comes out looking 'thick'... you have considered it on very nearly each and every bar you have appeared at it particularly is bright/modern. no longer basically like the incredibly some urethanes you truthfully pour it on the exterior and it particularly is a million/8' thick, particularly than brushcoat skinny like a varnish. i think Ace hardware incorporates it.
