I heard somewhere that changing your oil too much is bad for your car? Like, every 500-1000 miles. Is this true or is it just a wive's tale?

There is no need to change that often and yes every time you change the oil you dry start the engine for a second or two longer than a normal start because the oil has to be pumped through the new filter until it is full. But using synthetic is a waste of money and if you don't change it when required you cause a lot more damage to the engine.

Unless your really fanatical about changing your oil that often it's really a waste of money and time. I've not heard anything about it being bad but I would say it's a bit over the top. 3000 mile interval is the accepted norm for most people. Don't go by the manufacturers recommendation of 7500 or more because even that's too much. My 2000 Chevy Impala has the 7500 mile recommendation. Officially they try and show lower cost of ownership for the first 50,000 miles per government standards so they are going to recommend the bare minimum for maintenance. Most mechanics, car enthusiasts and owners I know go by the 3000 rule of thumb.

I had a friend in college that really loves his car so he changed the oil every 1,000 miles. But he doesn't do that anymore and I ask him, "Why not?" He said that he doesn't feel any difference in car's performance after an oil change.

Most of time, you can feel how the car behave better after oil change, but when you don't feel any thing, most likely you are wasting your money.

If you do any kind of extreme performance driving, then changing your oil more often will give you an extra layer of protection and confidence. Plus I believe race teams change all oils and fluids on their cars before the race. So in this case this is a good thing. Otherwise, you're just wasting your money.

Good Luck.

I've never heard that and it doesn't make any sense at all. Frequent oil changes are not going to harm any engine. The only thing that could happen is with the higher number of oil changes, the probability of who is doing it making a mistake, forgetting an oil plug, etc. is greater. Other than that, change the oil as often as you want. It sure works for expensive racing engines.

It's not bad for it but it is a big waste of money. As a matter of fact, most new cards today only call for the oil changes every 7500 miles and for Honda's they are every 10,000 miles.

You can change oil as often as you like. The newer the oil is the better it works. It is not bad for the car but it is bad for your budget and probably has no benifit. Using good oil and a good filter it is not necessary to change your oil that often.

I don't think it would be bad for your car, just bad for your bank account and the environment(all the used oil). In Europe oil drain intervals are much higher. Synthetics go even longer. check this out: http://www.amsoil.com/redirect.cgi?zo=1463115&page=news/oil_drain_intervals_2_06

Change it as many times as you want. Just remember how much you'll be spending.

Your supposed to change it every 3,000 miles or so. If you do it sooner than that, your just wasting your money.
