Don't give up and don't look down while going down an escalator. Just hold the handrail, stand firm and don't walk. You will be alright!

This may sound silly, but I bet it would work. Go to the mall, go up the escalator, then go down the other escalator with your body facing upwards. Your visual cue will be almost the same as going up an escalator, even though you are travelling backwards. Repeat several times until you feel OK about it. Next, go down with your body facing sideways. Don't look down the first few times. Then gradually steal more and more glances downwards. When you can spend almost all the time looking downwards, then you're ready to try the regular approach - body facing downwards. Do this several times until you're sure you're going to be OK with it.

I'm afraid of heights and even tho I do get up and down stairs and elevators it may sound silly but I hang on white knuckled to the rail and breathe a little sigh at the bottom. Try going down when there is no one else near the top so you don't feel embarrassed holding up a line. Stand at the top and take your time - watching it go by for a while, just to get your bearing. Then grab the rail tight and step off. Voila! you're on the way!

I'm scared of them too. So I just look down to get on very hurriedly then I pick a spot in the distance and concentrate on it until i get to the bottom then I watch carefully to step off in a big step away from the escalator

What do you really think is going to happen? Just try exposing yourself to the situation. Work your way up to riding down an escalator. If you really can't get over this phobia, just take the stairs.

Honestly, I don't know what to tell you. I myself am mortified of escalators and I don't know why. Every time I go to the mall, I say to myself, "Ok, you're going to use the escalator this time," and I'll walk right up to it and then have an anxiety attack if I don't walk away immediately. My solution is to just take the stairs--it's better for you anyway.

The only way to overcome your fear is to face your fear. Force yourself down it, and keep telling yourself that it will be alright and that nothing will happen to you. Fear is all mental. Once you face it, it will disappear and you'll be a changed person
