A water level is a simple device that one can make. Basically, it is a plastic tube of varying lengths that is filled with water. Hold the tube up to the item you want to measure. Hold the other end of the tube up. The height of the water in the tube ends is equal. Using a water level you can thus position extremely accurately items that are level to each other.

What is nice about a water level is that they can be used around corners, between objects on opposite walls or in different rooms. The length of the level is defined by the length of the plastic tube. The one drawback is that it usually requires two people to use a simple one, especially when the objects measured are separated by more than the reach of one person.

OK, you seem to have a variety of replies here, most seem basically correct. Water levels are easy to use and probably the best and only reliable way to get a level mark around corners. Below I have pasted a link to a site which shows you how to use and make a water level. They are much cheaper than a laser level, require no electricity and can be used by a single person if you have the know how.

Might be easier to explain if you can give us an example of what you want to use one for.

Lasers have pretty much replaced them, however water levels are still used. & are better in some applications.
Ancient & very accurate way to maintain a level line.
The term "water level zero" is sometimes used( rare these days) as a standard for being "dead on" w/ no room for error. Try Graingers online store if you want one .
"Water seeks its own level". so if you were to place a container of water with the surface at a height you need to establish , run a tube from the container to a clear vial or sight tube at the end ,the water level will be the same at both ends.....always.
Also, to prove the point ,even lasers have to be levelled with a spirit level.
The laser beam does'n t know of it is level or not.
Best regards

A water level is a simple clear vinyl tube 3/8 to 1/2 inch diameter anywhere from 50-200 feet long with plugs at each few feet of air on each endand a water reservoir like a five gallon bucket attached.

Hydrostatic pressure keeps water at the same level. Mark your level somewhere near the end opposite the reservoir. Hold it so the mark is at the height you need to level to. As you raise and lower the reservoir the water at the marked end will rise and fall. Situate the waterline in the reservoir at the level you want and the level in the tubing will match it.

I have one and have had it for years and have tried to use it on several occasions for landscaping projects and building projects. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment because I keep trying to make it work. It never does and it is a real pain in the butt to use. Save your money and buy a moderately priced laser level. Water levels suck. In fact, thanks for reminding me how useless these things are. I'm going out to the garage right now and throw the thing away.

Additional added later: A water level is a level consisting of a hose of varying lengths with transparent ends where a level line can be ascertained over long distances.

A level containing water or oil wherein a bubble is viewed in a glass tube is simply called a level or a construction level or a builder's level.

I assumed you were refering to a water level and not an ordinary level.

Simple device. A tube (clear) with water in it. Water seeks it's own level so when one end is held up to a position, the water at the other end will be at the same level as the water on the other end. You can increase or decrease the amount of water in the tube to meet your needs.

Water levels are easy. Just go and buy some vinyl tubing , fill with water. hold it against one object , the water level on the other side will be the same. just remember to hold both sides up .this requires two people. water will always seek it own level.

Yepp... they use water in them to help you find out if something level. You lay it across a surface you want level and then step back and see it the bubbles in the water thingy's are in the middle. It's pretty much self-explanitory. Home Depot/ Lowes

yeah it's a like a ruler but it has a water bubble in the middle, there are two lines, if the water bubble is in the middle of the two lines, whatever you using it on is straigh/level. They are called water levelers and you can get them at any hardware store... Home depot etc.
