The Wellington region is at the southern tip of the North Island, near the geographical centre of the country.

IMost definitely Wellington. It has changed a few times. Wellington replaced Auckland as capital sometime in the mid 1800's and before Auckland I think it may have been Waitangi. ... but not too sure on that one.
I think the reason Wellington finally became capital is because of it's centrality to the rest of the country. In a time where just about all travel was by ship or horse, it was a good idea to move it.

Wellington, aka Welly or windy city.
It's the capital city, above all in terms of culture and political bodies which are located in welly's beehive.
However, in terms of economy, the majority of headquarters and corporations / companies are located in Auckland, which is much bigger than welly, TV headquarters, etc etc. As for the airport, the major part of the international flights arrive in AKL airport ( since it can welcome the biggest aircrafts) whereas welly's airport is pretty small and can't welcome all types of aircraft. International flights arriving in Wellington are mostly from Oz or some pacific Islands.
Welly is a human sized town, very agreeable, you can cross the CBD and the most busy areas by foot, since the center is really compact. I'm not sure if it would be the best solution to get here and around in Auckland that looks more like a capital city !!

Lol...C. Wellington - but any dumbass could've used the internet.
I live in Australia and am very good at geography and can memorise at least 100 capital cities.
Auckland is the largest city but not the capital. Christchurch is another city.

Do you not know how to "google" or check the Wikipedia?
There have been other towns designated to Capital in the past, like Kororareka, Taihape, Eketahuna and Auckland, but at the present time (as of April 1st) the Capital is Wellington.
Don't expect other people to do everything for you, take a course in googling!
