They were originally called Feedback, and played a couple shows in 1976-77 under that name. They switched to The Hype in 1977 and played several shows under that name. On March 17, 1978, they entered a talent show in Limerick, Ireland, as "The Hype", but changed their name to "U2" on the sign-in sheet when they arrived for the competition.

They also played some Bowie, Ramones, Thin Lizzy, The Eagles, and Sex Pistols songs in the very early days.
