I do both. Have to. I live in an area where everybody either nods or waves to everyone they pass on the country roads, whether they know them or not. I'd look like a bobble head if I nodded at everyone.

Men understand the nod, most of the time I wave to women. My friend Anna and I give the nod. I give my husband the nod when one of our kids is doing something, too. It's the non-verbal "look at that!" around my house, too.
