just close school at 1:00
Instead of building schools all the time, we could just have
larger schools to begin with, and we could have
city activity centers for parents that work all day, which is most people.
In other words, have the DISD school, teaching 3 MEANINGFUL classes a day, and save all this useless study hall and extra cariculum BS for the activity centers, which would run from 1:00 - 7:00 pm.
You would still have football and cheerleading, it would just be
EXAMPLE: Yellowjacket football team
REPRESENTING: The DISD ACTIVITY CENTER
(rather than the actual school)
YELLOW JACKET CHEERLEADERS
Representing: THE YELLOW JACKET ACTIVITY CENTER
It would be free, since it is part of DISD, and optional.

NO, what's dumb is that
football is more important than
education
They should both be important, but
an activity center for such things would be more appropriate
It would still be affiliated with school, but optional and AFTER school and a part of the AFTER SCHOOL program
You could still be the LISD football team, but you would represent the LISD activity center, which is their AFTER SCHOOL program

With so many kids graduating and still unable to read I agree school hours should be longer.

Be happy that you are in school and just learning with three months of nothing to do in the summer.
Take your pick:
1. Working 10 hours on your feet with no summer vacation and working on weekends
2. Being a students with holidays, 3 months summer vacation and having fun.
Besides, everything that you learn has meaning. Literature, English grammar, math, science, working with computers, foreign languages and other stuff will help you later in life. You are learning skills to help you get a job. You live in a capitalist economic system so you need money (in other words paper)
to secure basic human needs ( water, shelter, food) and material needs.
Enjoy your student days, but I do agree with you that we should make our school hours more compatible with parent work hours.
Edit:
American students do have it better with school hours compared with other countries. In China and Japan, you go to school all day long! In Japan then you also go on Saturday. Did you know that Chinese students aren't encouraged to learn to play musical instruments. They HAVE to study 24/7.

Interesting ideas.
We adults do the best we can, with the resources we have.
And time is a resource which seems to be in shorter and shorter supply as one gets older.
In the meantime, make the most of the time you have at school - take as many courses and learn as much as you can. As you say, it's free to the student - so take advantage of it! Good luck.

Because public education has many constraints upon it, budget, community funding, employees, facility costs, community management.
And none of those entities want to give you an activity center instead of a school. Take more classes if you are bored.

My school day was from 8-3 and it was filled with classes. We went to school 5 days a week with the exception of teachers conference day. I look at my nephews schedules and they rarely attend a whole 5 day week with out a short day or a no class day. No wonder the schools are turning out what amounts to dysfunctional idiots.

I'm a high school student and I think that we need more school. Our education is pretty bad compared to the rest of the world and I think part of it is not being serious enough in our studies. Consider yourself lucky that you aren't a student in Japan or China... they are constantly studying and working which shows in their economy.

Do you have any idea how long school is in most countries? They go like its a job. Get real, if you want to be competitive in the work place you need as much schooling as you can get.

If the average intelligence of the High School graduates I have to deal with on a regular basis is any indication, school should be much LONGER.
