12A – Suitable for 12 years and over. No-one younger than 12 may see a ‘12A’ film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult. No-one younger than 12 may rent or buy a ‘12’ rated video or DVD. Responsibility for allowing under-12s to view lies with the accompanying or supervising adult.

the 12A certificate means if you are over 12 you may see the film but if you are under the certificate by about 2 years you may see the film accompanied by a responsible adult

12a, is if under 12 has to be supervised with an adult. I took my 9 and 6 year old and they loved it. My husband and myself didn't have a clue what was going on but the kids did.

It means you have to be 12 to go and see it on your own.If your under 12 you can go with an adult.
The a is to distinguish it from the 12 rating which meant you had to be 12 to see it at all.
