Jane's Addiction got the most comparisons to LZ when they broke onto the scene. I haven't really heard too many more of those lately.

Alright, I'm 30 and I think most, if not all of the bands today will not last more than few more years. The most recent bands, although not very new, that I think have true longevity, are U2, and one many people may not have heard of, Gov't Mule. They are one of the best Blues/Rock bands I have ever heard. The dudes voice is amazing and the band actually has good guitar players. Check them out, you will not be disappointed. Other then that, the Beatles, hands down are the greatest band ever, and in my opinion, no other band will ever come close to producing the amount of talent that those four men had. Each one of the Beatles, wrote and sang their own songs, as well as played many instruments. They started a music revolution that will be nearly impossible to do again.

You know, this question is a sort of double edged sword. I mean, it's all a matter of personal taste. I mean, I hate hate hate any bands that you see on the top 40, but can list off several right now who are just INCREDIBLE but you'll never hear on MTV.
On the other hand, a lot of the bands you listed, I'm just not a big fan of. The Stones are actually one of those bands that I personally can't stand (like the doors) for very specific reasons. But I basically have several points I'm trying to hammer home:
1. Good music is (in general) a matter of opinion and perspective.
2. There are deffinitely amazing bands still around, you just need to know where to look. Remember: Zepp wasn't a mainstream group until much later in the life of the band.

Here's a few you've never heard of. Most of them are recording overseas and you'll have to pay hefty import prices to get their albums, but you can find just about all of them at Amazon.com. They're all in the same style and influenced by the classic rock bands you mentioned.

Wig Wam

Impossible to say, since the classic rock scene in the 60's and 70' was so much different than today. Also tough to compare bands that have been around 8 years to one that has been around over 30.
If I had to pick:
Radiohead
Wilco
Beck
U2
Tool

Hey I'm 16 but I realize today's music sucks. If I could invent a time machine I would go back to 1980 and grow up in that decade to witness the birth of Heavy Metal.

You are comparing apples to oranges. Instead try to find what you like in today's music and forget about if it stacks up to what the 60's 70's and 80's put out.
I would say Wilco is as good as any of those bands.
If you enjoy it who cares what anyone else thinks.

So far, I think Tool has the best chance. They've already influenced one genre and a slew of bands already, and the band doesn't look like they're going to stop anytime soon.

You should listen to Wolfmother. It's kind of like the older bands[which are awesome]. Good bands are hard to find today.
