That is just word play. They are fingers just like the others. If you look at their bones and muscles and tendons they follow the same rules for all five on each hand. In fact they look like the way your toes work on your feet.

All bones in all your hand digits are called the same thing, phalanges. So, judging by this, they are all phalanges, and all fingers. The only difference between the thumb is that there are less bones. Monkeys don't have an opposable thumb, does that mean they have five fingers? If we have an opposable thumb, would that mean we have 4 fingers, and we can't call the thumb a finger just because of it's placement?

Dictionary def of finger: a million : any of the 5 terminating contributors of the hand : a digit of the forelimb; exceptionally : another than the thumb. so they are rather perfect in that the thumb is often observed as the thumb and others are observed as the finger (i.e., ring finger, index finger, etc.). yet they are in simple terms incorrect with regards to the pinky i might say. needless to say nevertheless, people generally have 5 hands on each and every hand, because of the fact the thumb is a particular style of finger.

I can't move my pinky without moving my ring finger, so I'm thinkin' your lookin at four fingers at least on each hand with an opposable thumb. These terms are not very scientific anyway.
