Best bet - fess up - return the item - tell the company what happened - and work out some kind of payment schedule.
They may be so surprised at getting the item back that they only charge for a fraction of the time it's been out (a lot of stock sits around anyway).

Ummm, yeah. You can rest assured that the rent-a-center has thought this one up, and they'll make you sign so many contracts before that big-screen plasma TV walks out the door that if you so much as breathe wrong against the contracts they'll bring a sheriff to help them take not only the TV, but the car, the house, the boat, your mother's cat, your first born, etc.

It's theft. Sure they might go through channels, the collection agency route etc. but..bottom line is...it's theft. Not to mention the damage on your credit rating...but a criminal conviction will mess up that anyway.

depends on the state. you certainly can get billed the amount of the item. and when left unpaid, collection agencies will start to try and collect the debt. and if it is still left unpaid, rent-a-center can file suit - criminal for thef and civil by way of a warrent in debt. not a fun situation.

Yes it will become stolen property- and there is another term used when this happens but i cant recall.. tell your friend that if she cant pay for it give it back--it surely isnt worth getting a record over.
