Thanks for the referral Jon
Basically I say ditto to the others that said the males rarely ever eat the eggs, but it does look like they are. I have had some few males eat eggs over the years, but it's rare. I have also had females eat eggs during spawning like you saw, but most of the time the male will ruin them away from the eggs before they eat many.
Ift sounds like you have a new pair, maybe they have never spawned before and that can be a problem. If the container isn't large enough for the female to leave the area while the male places the eggs in the nest it can cause lots of stress on both of them.
I would suggest giving them another try after conditioning them and make sure they have a large enough container. I would suggest a 10 gallon at least.

Thanks Jon for the heads up. You should never remove the pair while they are spawning. It stresses both fish. The female will eat some eggs if the male doesn't pick them up fast enough. In order for the eggs to be fertilized the male has to embrace the female. When he squeezes the eggs out he fertilizes them also. You should only remove the female once the male chases her away from the nest and never lets her back under it. Most likely the male got stressed out from you messing in the tank and ate the eggs. Some males will do this regardless if they are young and new at breeding. Do a little more research on them and then maybe you can have a successful spawn.

I have raised Bettas before. The male did the same thing.Except they are not eating the eggs. He puts the eggs in his mouth and releases the eggs into a bubble nest that they made.make sure you separate the female or she will eat the eggs.

Male bettas do not eat the eggs. Cody, if you have ever spawned bettas, you should know this.
The males pick up the eggs in their mouths (might look as if he is eating them) and spit them into the bubble nest. Then he stands guard over them until they hatch. The female is the one you need to remove after the spawning is complete (can take an hour or two, sometimes).
Email me if you have more questions, I have spawned bettas on many occasions and raised the fry. I will be glad to help if I can.

Um Cody, I think you're a little off. You may very well be a Betta Breeder, but the male also stores them in the bubble nest and watches over that nest too am I wrong? Let me send this out to the other Betta breeders I know on here. He ate two of the eggs? I dunno why, but I'll take a guess....he sensed something wrong with them maybe? Like they weren't formed properly or different then what he saw in the others and naturally just eliminated them? I'm just guessing at that, but I'm sure in natural selection process, there is something in thier senses that triggers them to know when something isn't right in reproducing.

ok, except you attempt to reproduce them and understand all approximately it and understand a thank you to enhance the youngsters, please do not do it. My men, breeding men and non-breeding men alike, build nests for all time. It does not mean you will desire to reproduce them, it only ability they are waiting. each in some circumstances they do exactly it to entertain themselves, form of like a pastime. do not freak out and rush into it, only condition the chosen pair for 2 weeks on solid protein rich meals. positioned the pair's tanks close mutually so they'd see one yet another each now and back too. Wait till he has a bubblenest and he or she has vertical bars alongside her physique. Then in case you conditioned them suited and that they are exhibiting indicators of being waiting, launch the female into the spawning tank the place at this element the male already has been in there and development his bubblenest. The male will chase her yet once you supply her a great number of places to cover and he's not hurting her badly (and he or she is not kicking his butt) then you definately're ok. it may take in to a million-2 days for them to start up wrapping and spawning.

because that what they do, you have to remove them from the tank after spawning to let the eggs grow.
