Well I've owned these little guys for a while and yes they do grow slow, you will need at least a 29g rectangle aquarium for 1 fully grown and even then they get bored, if you noticed him at the side of the tank going up and down that means his bored lol.

Anyways by the time he is more than 2" in length he should be in a brackish tank NOT a freshwater. When they get bigger you can buy ghost shrimp to feed it they love those, and also if you want when you get a bigger tank for your puffer you can use your current tank to house 2-5 snails and when they have babies feed some to your puffer they will love them as well.

What i used to do is every month i would buy a $2 crab (About 3") and drop him in the tank within days my puffer would tear it apart and eat it, it helps trim down their teeth. When you are transferring him don't use a net as he can suck up some air try and use a water container.

First of all, you need to have a well planted tank for any Puffers. They are very intelligent fish that need something to explore when they aren't eating. Their beaks also need to be filed down by their food, so feed it some live snails every week to give it something to crunch on. The reason your Puffer isn't eating is because it is accustomed to live food, so you will need to hand feed it to make it appear like the food is still alive. It will not eat flake food. Also, they are brackish fish, make sure you are adding about 1-2 tablespoons of marine salt (Instant Ocean) for each gallon of water. I would start adding the salt very slowly, only a couple tablespoons each day to allow the fish to acclimate. Always keep them under water, if they swallow air, they puff slightly which makes it difficult to breath. This site is a great help-http://badmanstropicalfish.com/brackish/brackish.html. Good luck!

maximum puffers will tolerate incredibly some salinities, yet you will want much less issues in case you hold it brackish. they may be companies to ailment if stored in right now clean for too long. many of the tropical fish that would stay to tell the tale with a puffer, will tolerate the salt. i might use 2 tablespoons according to 10 gallons and acclimate your different fish earlier going as much as 4 tablespoons in 10 gal. it particularly remains no the place close to the quantity of salt in salt water.
