It's really not hard. Go to college, and simply run for a state or local office, like a city council spot or for a state level, become a representative or senator, then run for a national office.

They throw their hat in the ring at their local community court house and go from there. Yes I think you need to be a lying egomaniac to be a politician.

Either file with the party you want to run with or file as an Independent ( I believe with a local court house will work.. but I'll have to double check that) and then start going door to door and posting signs and giving speeches and making appearances and... well you get the idea. It's a good idea to NOT run against an incumbent unless you have a lot of spare money to throw around or they are very unpopular. It's also a good idea to be independently wealthy or to be retired because if you do the job right.. you won't have time for anything else.

Sometimes, as in the case with my Dad, a single issue can get you into politics. (Now, I never considered him a "politician" per se, but, nonethess, he ran for a seat on the town council. One of the major issues was the building of a condominium complex on the site of an old historic building which had been burned to the ground.

Other people, I guess, are just passionate about many things and enjoy confrontation!

Through family, money, or public service. Those with enough money can simply say "here I am, the answer to your prayers" on every TV and radio channel, and have ad men package them to be very appealing.

But I think a lot start as volunteers for charities or civic groups and get asked to run for office. While I was serving as president of my local friends of the library group, I was asked if I wanted to run for library trustee (I declined) and I'm sure others involved in civic activities get asked to run for office (and others accept).
