A monument to the auto industry. Only city in the world where mugger gangs roaming the highway while it is gridlocked have pulled people out of their cars and murdered them.

Well I have been there actually. Detroit, especially downtown Detroit, is an awesome place. Lots going on. Plenty to do. An amazing place. Several years ago I would have said differently. But now, I love it. I don't live there. Unfortunately I live about an hour away, so to get to all of the great stuff I have to spend mucho gas money. But it's worth it.
BTW, St. Louis was named the country's most dangerous city for 2006. Memphis was the most dangerous metropolitan area. Although Detroit was in the top of the most dangerous cities, you should also know that Baltimore, Atlanta, and Toledo, my hometown rank right up there too. And for the person in Atlanta that thinks Detroit is horrible, Atlanta is right not far behind, ranking as the 17th most dangerous city. Of course Compton, and Washington D.C. are there as expected, but so are Camden NJ, Youngstown OH, Richmond VA, Reading PA, and Orlando FL among others. They are in the top 25. I was not all that surprised to see that my city, Toledo OH, was 41st in the list of most dangerous cities in the nation. This place is a hole. It actually ranks worse than Miami (45), Inglewood(61) and L.A. (121). It's no wonder I'm ready to move out to L.A.

First of all let me say that I was born in Detroit and still live there. Second of all the bad stuff about tDetroit are the crime, debt, abandoned buildings. The good stuff is evrything else. Third of all is that I can't stand it when people talk real dirty about Detroit. If u ain't never been here then don't say nothing about it. Don't go by no he say she say stuff because that is a bunch of crap. If ya don't know fa sho then don't go by what other people say. Flat out. Something I can't really stand is that people be like oh Detroit is such a bad city and all this stuff, but as soon as we win a championship. Oh yeah Detroit is a great city and we won. How is you gon suddenly be part of Detroit just because of a big win.

There are nice areas of Detroit, and it does get a lot of bad press but the truth is the city is still in a bad way. The crime rate has gone down, but the bad areas haven't gone away. I can't stand the BS when some people from Detroit talk about how Detroit is safer that most other cities and that it's not as bad as people say it is ... OH PLEASE. It IS dangerous in areas of Detroit, and it IS seedy in the downtown area, and the surrounding neighborhoods.

I think Detroit gets more bad press than it does good press, thats for sure. I was reading thru some of the answers before mine & it appears that some of these answerers have jaded ideas about Detroit. Let me tell you something. Detroit is ghetto, yes it is. HOWEVER, Detroit is only ONE of hundreds of major cities that are 'ghetto'! For some reason any time something bad happens in Detroit, its all over national freakin news but let something good happen - you'd never know about it. I wish people would stop ASSuming stuff about Detroit & actually pay it a visit & see for themselves. Detroit is not the best, safest or most beautiful city in the country but it for DAMN sure isnt the worse. Honestly yeah, Id suggest living in the 'burbs for safety reasons & low car insurance (trust me it makes a BIG difference!) but dont think for one moment that crime doesnt exist in the burbs. Detroit has plenty of good things going for it not just bad things & people need to stop talking **** about Detroit, especially if you have never been. As you can probably tell (LOL), I was born & raised in Detroit - Im 27. I have some negative thoughts on Detroit as well but the difference between mine & some other people is that, alot of people go by hearsay, Im going by EXPERIENCE - what I see, what I hear, what I know. U know? So I would suggest that, in order to get an accurate view of my hometown, Id come here for a day or two & see for yourself. I bet you wont be hungry, there are restaurants/fast food places every freakin where, in the city & out, LOL.
Bottom line, I wish people would stop talking trash about Detroit & start finding the positives that are going on, like the building up of downtown or some of our nationally acclaimed high schools or some landmarks, etc. SOMEthing other than the crime rate or the 'ghetto'.

I've been there a few times, but I pretty much think of Detroit as being the middle east of the U.S. There are more arabs in the area, than any other ethnicity- which is not necessarily a bad thing, but that is simply the way it is.

There are nice parts and crappy parts about Detroit, just like any other big city. Since it is so populated it is going to have more crime than another small city. It also has very nice areas that are very nice to live with nice schools and things to do. It just depends on where you want to go, because downtown is rugged.

I grew up in Nebraska, but live in the burbs of Detroit now.
The burbs are like anywhere else, they're nice but a few areas have their problems. As far as actual city, downtown Detroit...it's ghetto. Lots of burned out buildings, old warehouse looking buildings with all the glass windows broken and graffiti. Actual Detroit is crappy, and it doesn't help that the people there keep electing and re-electing corrupt leaders.

great place to visit, lots to do, nice restaurants, specially Greek town. The Motor City has a bad rap about crime, but it is way better than most. I feel safer in Detroit that I do in Toledo. At least I can walk the street after 6.00 PM
