Ok, I must respond to the post above.
Xanax is is NOT a narcotic. Xanax can be addictive though. It is a fact that narcotics such as tylenol 3 and percocet are safer during pregnancy than asprin & motrin.
I have a history of post-partum depression. I suffered it after the birth of my 2nd child and then did not suffer it after the births of my 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th children. Do not let mental illness keep you from trying to conceive more children!!!!! Actually, I would rather have suffered through months of depression and have my son than to not.
BTW, I took zoloft thoughout my 3rd pregnancy and all was well. I have also taken xanax while breastfeeding and it was OK'd.

Do not take any of it. I just found out I am 6 weeks pregnant & I have been on Lorazepam 0.5mg 3 times a day for a year now. I stopped taking it as soon as I found out. I had terrible withdrawls & asked the ob doctor for something that could curve the symptoms & was told that benzos, like xanax can cause birth defects simular to Fetal alcohol syndrome in babies b/c it's a depressant. Especially during the 1st trimester which is the most critical. Birth defects occur during 5-10 weeks gestation. So stay away from it. You can't change what you already took so stay strong. I only had two weeks of withdrawls & got through it. It's actually nicer to know you can handle problems w/ postive thinking & exercise. Avoid caffeine too b/c it makes the anxiety worse. Good luck

I was on klonopin (basically the same kind of drug) when I got pregnant this time. I was suffering pretty severe episodes of depression so they had me on 4 mg a day. That's a pretty large dose.
Anyway...this was a planned pregnancy, so I was able to stop after being pregnant about 3 or 4 weeks.
The interesting thing was that my psychiatrist who is also a neurologist (not a dummy or a quack) told me to keep taking the meds, because the baby was better off with my body at peace than my body all stressed out. My OB told me to grieve, get on with my life and not take them anymore.
I kind of hit a happy median. I do still take a pill here and there when I just can't take it. Maybe 3 a month. I figure both doctors are right. There is some risk to the baby if I take meds, but the baby is also at risk if I'm all to pieces.
Klonopin is supposedly a safer alternative to xanax, so maybe you could try very light doses of that...or just keep taking none at all. But if you get very low or feelings of hurting yourself or someone else, I would go ahead and take my meds.

Xanax Is NOT safe! By any means! Don't listen to people who are not dr's or nurses! It is a class D, which is almost the worse class of medicines! It says;
* Positive evidence of human fetal risk exists.
* Potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks (e.g. life threatening situations or serious illness).
* The drug is teratogenic in animals at high doses producing skeletal anomalies and by affecting the fetal neurodevelopment it causes cerebellar defects, reduced motivation and increased male aggression in the adult offspring exposed in utero.
* Unknown transfer through the placenta but other benzodiazepines cross the placenta freely.
* Suggested possible association between in utero exposure to alprazolam and triazolam with congenital anomalies , the number of exposures was too small to make a conclusion.
* Chronic maternal use of the drug throughout pregnancy can cause neonatal withdrawal.
In english, xanax causes; Cleft lip or palate and all kinds of problems!
I took it until I found out I was pregnant, and I would never touch it again! Its the worse from 6-12 weeks when the baby is forming.
If you have taken it this long don't stress about it, but try to wean off. Also in the low low doses, most likely you wont have a baby with birth defects.
I know what its like to have anxiety! I have it as well!
Good luck!

I am on Zoloft 100 mg during this pregnancy and my doctor said it is completely safe. Zoloft also works for anxiety so I would ask to be put back on it. My Mother took Xanax for her entire pregnancy with my brother and had no problems. The benefits need to outweigh the risks. Being depressed during pregnancy also has side effects, some much worse than being on an antidepressant. Definitely talk to your doctor about your concerns. If you don't feel like your doctor is addressing your problems correctly, switch doctors. It is important for you to find a doctor that you feel has your best interest in mind.

DO NOT TAKE XANAX!!! I lost my baby at 13 weeks into my pregnancy. I had a anxiety attack and took a low dose one and a few days later I was spotting then things got worst and lost the baby! I'm 7 weeks pregnant again and I'm steering clear of ANY meds.

If this anxiety and deppression is a problem for you right know its best that you should have restained from getting pregnant twice in a row. I know being pregnant can be highly stressful thats what I mean by that. xanax Is extremely bad for the baby! Not trying too be rude but I have had horrible panic attacks that sent me too the hostipital but never took them while i was pregnant and I had them extremely bad the first trimester they went away though. Prayer was the best solution. Xanax is a narcotic and highly addictive I remeber when i stopped taking it I was shaking and having horrible withdraws imagine what happends too the baby! its a proven fact that they will have birth deffects research it on the internent. im sorry your going through this I fill your pain.

Hi, sorry to hear you are feeling so bad. I can't advise on Xanax, but the following steps should eliminate (or at least significantly reduce) your panic attacks and anxiety:
1. Breathe properly - if you control your breathing, you control panic. As soon as you notice the signs of anxiety, check your breathing: breathe in slowly through your nose pushing your tummy out (to the count of 5 or so). Breathe out slowly and for a bit longer (to the count of 7 or so) through your mouth. Do not breathe rapidly or shallowly (in the chest area). This will soon restore the balance of oxygen and you will feel a lot better.
2. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy! CBT is proven to be the most effective thing for panic attacks, OCD and anxiety etc. It takes a bit of work, but it is super effective. (After 15 years of panic attacks, mine stopped completely). You can speak to your doctor about taking a course or you can take a course for free online at: www.livinglifetothefull.com
3. Try relaxation exercise tapes (progressive muscular relaxation). They really help if you practise often enough. You can get free downloads in you put "progressive muscle relaxation" into Google (e.g. lots of universities have them as free downloads)
With each step practise makes perfect. (i.e. practise the steps every day, not just when you are feeling bad). I hope you feel better soon. Best of luck!
