I just had a previous questioned answered with a question, "Why don't you ask President Bush why he would send millions to Iraqi citizens while allowing US citizens to starve in the streets?". Is this the biggest load of crap ever written? I work in poor neighborhoods loaded with "homeless" people. The government provides homeless shelters and government housing, emergency rooms are required by law to treat anybody who goes to them, and non-profit organizations actually pick up people from shelters and drive them to street corners to beg for money. How long do you think it has been since someone actually starved to death, and I mean died due to not being able to eat, in the United States of America?

The 'starving in the streets' comment is really a figure of speech or an expression of art not to be taken literally. Poverty in America is a seperate issue from the war and occupation of Iraq anyway. Personally I'm against both. The war should be brought to an immediate close...that would certainly be doable. 'Poverty' might take a little longer. Certainly most of the borrowed money spent on and in Iraq could be saved and put to better purpose...like actually tracking down members and supporters of Terror Inc. The money saved by exiting Iraq could be used to deal with the question of poverty. But don't worry, Hoss...as long as the Bush Junta is in charge none of that will happen. We'll continue to ignore the poor bastards on the streets and continue to support the rich bastards that insist on keeping this war going. Jesus said, "...the poor are always with you." Thank God George Bush won't!

You will find the most starving people in the school system and working. A large percentage of Americans live below the poverty line. Inner city school have developed breakfast and lunch programs to feed some of the undernourished children in the country, however they have a limited spectrum and are not available in all districts and in all schools.

I have seen kids out on the street, I have seen people out of the street. I have never asked them if they are starving, but not once have a seen them eating something,

You act as if some one must be left alone long enough to starve to death .
Whats at issue is the number of people who die from related problems associated with a poor diet due to lack of proper intake .

Having lived in Chicago I can say that I've seen many living on the streets . And I don't know each ones personal plight , but clearly many of them are on drugs / their own fault .
Also , I've had the unique opportunity to know someone who left the real world and chose the streets . He was a troubled teen who got in a fair amount of trouble when we were all growing up . Later in life , I dated his sister . At that time I did not know that her brother had left reality . Soon , I began to ask " Hey , whatever happened to your brother " ? And that's when I learned the rest of the story . She said that he had chose to live under a bridge in downtown Chicago . Homeless by choice . The family had tried several times to bring him home and help him , but he'd last only about a day and then return to the streets .
Also , one of the radio stations did one on one interviews with countless homeless people . The result ? Most were there by CHOICE. . . . not all , but most .

And now you all know . .. .the rest of the story !!

EDIT * - Have some compassion for the ones who are willing to WORK . One day after paying for a huge submarine sandwich to eat on the long drive home I was approached by a homeless person wanting to wash my windshield . I told him 'no thanks' , but gave him my sandwich . I just couldn't feel comfortable swallowing knowing that he didn't have anything AND was willing to work !!

There are also churches where I am that feed the homeless and give out groceries (to low income families). Many of the homeless are addicts or alcoholics. Many times I've tried to give them something to eat and they would ask for money. One person threw a sandwich back at me.

There is no longer hunger in the US. Only "Food Insecurity". The government changed the name.

"One of the most disturbing and extraordinary aspects of life in this very wealthy country is the persistence of hunger. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that in 2005:

35.1 million people lived in households considered to be food insecure.
Of those 35.1 million, 22.7 million are adults (10.4 percent of all adults) and 12.4 million are children (16.9 percent of all children).

The number of people in the worst-off households (previously called “food insecure with hunger” and now called “very low food security” households) rose in 2005, from 10.7 to 10.8 million. "

You're right. There are many many many homeless shelters. In los angeles..most of those that live on the streets rather than homeless shelters choose to..some kind of mental problem :(
You can thank Reagan for that...he closed state funny farms and as a result..many mentally ill people ended up on the streets
But you're right...none are starving

Are you trying to say that no one in America ever goes hungry? That's kind of a stretch, isn't it?
