A dog and cat together weigh 27 Kg. If the dog's weight is an odd number, and if he weighs twice as much as she does, how much does each weigh?

First of all to make matters easy, we know that any two odd numbers when added together equal and even number. Secondly, we know that we are dealing with three equal measures of weight that total 27 kg, one for the cat and two for the dog. Therefore we can represent these equal portions through the equation:

w = 27/3

w = 9

At this stage, I would have to question the assertion that the dogs weight is an odd number (at least in kilograms).

For:

9 * 2 = 18 : dog's weight
9 * 1 = 9 : cat's weight

The sum of these two weights is 27 kg the cat weighing half as much as the dog.

This question makes no sense:

D + C = 27
D = 2C

Substituting 2C for D, we get:

3C = 27

C=9

So the cat weighs 9 kilos; and the dog, 18.
Am I reading something wrong? The dog's weight CAN'T be an odd number and still be exactly twice that of the cat.

ok

Dog=d Cat=c
D+C=27
D=2C
substatute eq 2 into 1
2C+C=27 C=9kg
D=18 Kg
since the dog weighs twice as the cat then the dog must have an even weight and cannot satisfy the condition you gave. 2 x odd number = even #

It doesn't make any difference what the cat weighs the dog will always weigh an even number.

Let c = cat's weight, d = dog's weight all in kilos.
c + d = 27
d = 27 - c
d = 2c

27 - c = 2c
27 = 3c
c = 9

Answer: c = 9, d = 18
