We humans are exceedingly good at self deception. We can rationalize anything. For example, we all see ourselves as basically good. Even criminals plotting their next crime think of themselves as basically good.

Once we convince ourselves we are basically good, then the reasoning goes like this: I don't know if God exists or not, but I think a good God would not send me, a basically good person, to hell. Now once all possibility of judgment is rationalized away, we can be at peace. Of course, it is a false peace that doesn't bear examination.
