The only time you can invoke your 5th amendment right is if answering the question is going to lead to self incrimination.

Because you say you are pleading the 5th will not stop them from asking questions. It just means you do not have to answer.

If they ask you a question that would not be self incriminating (and thus protected under the 5th) the judge can still make you answer the question.

Granted, I've garnered this information only from TV shows, but it seems to me that you have to assert your right following EACH question.
