Tile is definetly more astheticly pleasing to the eyes. However it is alot harder to keep clean in the bathrooms. I am on my 4th home...and have had both vynil and tile. Although vynil will not last as long, it is inexpensive to replace, warmer in your feet, and a heck of alot easier to keep clean.. I reccomend vynil over tile anyday.

I like ceramic tile. Yes, it will be cold on your feet in the winter, I just use bathroom rugs and have no problem with this. I prefer ceramic, especially for the bathroom, because that is going to be the wettest room of the house...and even more so if you have kids! Make sure you get textured tiles...we didn't know to do that for the bathroom and needless to say there have been lots of slips and falls when our kids start running through the house with wet feet. I have cleaned many many ceramic floors and many many vinyl floors....not much difference in how well they clean up. Tile has grout, but it won't show dirt depending on the color you choose.

Ceramic tile is just nicer than vynil.... period. If you are woried about the coldness of the tile. I noticed at Lowe's the other day a heater coil that was made to be put under the tiles to keep them nice and toasty for your feet. I spoke to the lady about them and she said that they were becoming fairly common place. I am tiling my laundry room, so I don't think I will heat it.

Vinyl is really only an option if money or handyness is an issue. Tile isn't difficult to install, but stirring thinset is tough (tore my rotator cuff). But for the money, the extra $1/sqft for the ceramic vs vinyl will pay off in 5 -10 years when the vinyl starts to crack and needs to be replaced or the toilet overflows and ruins the subfloor through the gaps in vinyl.

Vinyl floors can be dangerous in bathrooms. They're VERY slick if the floor gets wet or if you get out of a shower/tub with wet feet.
You can put heaters under ceramic tile or place rugs on the floor if you're worried about coldness.

I put a ceramic floor down in one bathroom, and we have ceramic in another. I like them - they're easy to care for, never stain, and look better than vinyl, I think. And if they're installed correctly, and you don't juggle hammers in the bathroom, they'll last forever. We had a vinyl floor put down in the kitchen and laundry room less than 10 years ago, and it really shows the wear. When it gets replaced, it will be with ceramic tile.

go to home depot or lowes and in the flooring dept you will find ARMSTRONG floor patch/skim coat it will cost less between $12 and $18 for a 25 lb bag that should be enough for one bathroom. Do not use fixall or vitex it cracks and releases over time. You will also need a float trowel it will have a handle and have 4 smooth edges $8 make sure the base is off in the bath room and the floor is clean. you can mix the patch on the floor or in a bucket, since this is your first time I would use the bucket. you mix the patch with water and it will have a cake batter texture to it pour a little on the floor and smooth it out over the entire floor, depending on the grout lines and how flush they are you might have to do more than one coat takes about 20 minutes between coats to dry only mix what can be used eached time once you have a smooth surface you can lay the vinyl right over the top.

You would want to use linoleum for any areas that are prone to wet/dampness. i.e. bathrooms, kitchens, etc. It is easier to clean and also if you use ceramic tile water will get trapped in the grout causing mold. Vinyl is basically used for wall coverings.

i have ceramic tile in my bath and i hate it, its always cold on the feet, and to me it just never looks clean.
my husband loves ceramic tile(what does he know)
me i would go with vinal. if you go with ceramic i would go with a medium to dark color and colored grout to match not the white or gray grout. this may help in the appearance.
i have white and it looks crappy.
