In terms of astrophysics, it helped prove a theory about the moon's origin. The theory stated that just after earth formed, another planet the size of mars collided with it. This blew off the crust, which formed a ring and then recondenced into the moon. When material from the moon returned to earth, it nearly matched the composition of the rocks in earth's crust. This suggested the theory was very likley to be true.
Space flight accelerated the development of the silicon chip. Computers composed of individual transistors were too big to send into space. Silicon chips packed thousands of transistors into a very small space. This development was then commercialized, first in electronic calculators and then personal computers. The increase in the numbers of personal computers then made the internet possible.

First off, just knowing we could actually do it was a benefit. Other than that, we dropped the ball by not constructing a perminent base. Had we done that, we could be ahead in techology far beyond what we see now. Because of Politics and bad desisions we lage some 40 years behind in benefits and wonders.

Scientific learning and technological demonstration...
We collected samples which yielded significant improvements in the understanding of the Moon's origins and the history of the Earth/Moon system.
We demonstrated a the technologies and procedures to conduct manned exploration of another planetary body...this, I think constituted the most significant contribution - answering the 'can it be done?' question

Improvements in communications technology; improvements in medeical monitoring technology; development of metallurgical and other fabrication techniques that could be transferred to domestic applications; incredible developments in computer technology; miniaturisation of video cameras (because it would not be practical to carry a TV camera like you see in TV studios) leading to domestic camcorders being commercially available; employment for hundreds of thousands of people; revenue for businessmen in the areas where space facilites were constructed; the collection of lunar material and its return to Earth; an improvement in our understanding of our local neighbourhood, and ultimately an improvement in our understanding of our own world.

The main benefit from the first moon landing was to place mirrors on it, in strategic locations. It was used as a spy satilite in or sorts. Now primative, at the time was used as something like a google earth.
