It's hard pick one overall best horror movie out of all the subgenres of horror, but one classic outshines them all.
_Nosferatu_ (1922), a silent horror movie loosely based on Bram Stoker's _Dracula_ delivers some remarkably frightening imagery with the use of shadows and technology primitive compared to today's standards.
It's creepy, giving you the feeling of something unseen over your shoulder, not someone behind you with a double-bladed ax.
Today's horror movies rely on shock instead of "scare." A good horror film will have you believing in the unbelievable. Torture films, like the Saw series, may have a compelling storyline, but they use guts and gore to supplement mystery and fear.
If you want blood and fanfare, this isn't the movie for you.

The original Dracula with Bela Lugosi. No blood, but a lot of suspense.
