Sure, lots of people try to think about it.
Right off the bat, life has no purpose unless there is a Creator/God.
“Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.” –Bertrand Russell (noted 20th century philosopher, mathematician and atheist)
And it doesn't make any sense for those who think there is a God to then go make something up such as "God put us here to be happy". Isn't that self serving?
What makes sense is that if we think that God might exist, then go seek Him. If we need purpose so badly (and we do), then it is highly likely that he put that need into us so that we would seek Him.
But if we insist that He doesn't exist, then we need to forget about purpose. There are various ways to do this:
1) Pretend that you have a purpose, i.e. "I want to make a difference in the world"
2) Keep very busy, e.g. sports, video games, Yahoo, etc.
3) Focus on little happy feelings we get during a normal day, e.g. good food at restaurant, etc.
But for me, I prefer my purpose in life to be real so I seek God.

This is a common question. The fact is, we find ourselves alive, and we cherish it, but then what should we do with it? The fact is we aren't born with a sense of purpose. If you talk to people about it, it is a good conversation topic. I have found that most people don't seem to know what their personal life purpose is, and it doesn't seem to bother them much.
On the other hand, I have met people who are passionate about things and it seems to occupy their lives in varying ways, sometimes to a distraction and they suffer, and sometimes in a positive way which I wish I could have.
If you feel you are lacking purpose in your life, that could be a wonderful thing. The world is full of problems and needs people who will make solving them their own purpose. Maybe you will be among them. Good luck.

Yes, there are many philosophers who have thought the same question. However, none of us really know. To some people though they have their own purposes and goals in life, whether it's to become happy, rich, successful, a CEO of a big company, or to have children.
I think God intends for us to make our own goals and our OWN purposes for living.
But, according to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything, is the Question to which the the Answer is 42.
So Douglas Adams says the answer to life is 42.

It's about hackwork, accomplishing for yourself as oppose a moment of being center of attention. It is about healing certain scars to a extent. If you're a parents certainly don't infect upon you child what you endured. If it's wrong for someone to do a certain thing to do to you, it's wrong for you to do it. What is it with parents setting negative cycle? Before having kids, hash things out with your parents. It's not your child's fault if yo didn't get the attention that you desired.
I feel that there are some parents who have a book called "Scar the Child Digest'. Talking about spearing the rod.
Another thing that mystifies me is when the kid is in the '20's and '30's and the parents still don't get the picture asking "Why don't you visit me?"
Dr. Phil says that when you treat your kids a certain way, you're training them how to treat you?
Instead of getting on the offspring's case about not being their for the parent in the nursing home, ask the parent if they would visit them if they were their offsprintg. I would love to see that because if they were treated the same, it would be no funeral and "You Give Love a Bad Name" would be played and the kids would call it a day.
I wonder what Chris & Tina Crawford played for Joan. It turned out that being Bing Crosby's son was everything other than a white xmas. I read that one son cared so little aobut Bing's death that whne informed about it, he continued his golf game.
This something to think about.
Raise you child to be a "One Momen in Time" not a "One".

This is probably one of the most asked questions in this category (do a search and you'll see)...I don't think we need a purpose for living...we live and that's enough for me. I try to make my life as groovy as I can, but I don't spend any time wondering why I'm here or why anyone else is here...Life just is.

I could explain this to you, from what the Bible explains. I am talking about the Old Testament and also The New Testament. some or the answers about why God lets people starve. also why God will not help us with Miracles. the answer can be found on the last few pages of the Old Testament mainly the very last page. that is if you can understand what he is referring to and why.
God, also points out that we were placed here on this Earth to be judged. for he does not want any evil in Heaven. so in this way he can see and judge for himself. this is why there is no more miracles. for he could not help the people if he was to find out who were the evil or Good.
This is also why God, changed to the New Testament. to start a new, with out Miracles and any interference on his part. for all will be judged. for all will have their place. for their own actions.
parts of this I cannot remember, so I skipped lots of it. I am writing this from memory, please read the Bibles to see for yourself. for parts of this is listed in the New Testament and some in the Old Testament.
{ view the Old Testament, but again if you can understand what he is referring too. it explaining how and why for the reason of the New Testament)
But also I know, some do not believe in the Bible. that is your choice. But as they also ask.. why are we here? and they are yet, to give me any answer better than, we do not know.

The purpose of life is getting the chance to know the Creator and all of his/her creations and to witness the surrounding beauty of nature. The purpose of life is to be the best that you can be. The purpose of life is to share. The purpose of life is to understand and embrace that we are all connected. The purpose of life is to erase hate and racism. The purpose of life is to walk in beauty each day.

My belief is that our life should be lived in a way which will allow us to have eternal life. This way is the teachings of the Bible. Once we do not life this life it does not make any sense as there is no purpose living as when we die there will be no eternal life. When we live for GOD we will have eternal life.

The thrill is in the hunt and the fact that you are seeking the answer shows aspiration to achieve. Keep looking! The meaning of life is different for everyone. But most of us agree that life is a gift. Cherish every second and don't get discouraged by nay sayers and negativity. Do your thang and achieve in spite of them. Keep searching. Be leary of anyone who tells you they know.

Yes,of course ive stopped to think bout this often , but i have really never got the answer .
What i think is , that he who is always Happy and Contented ,in other words Bliss , is the one who has really understood the real meaning of life . It is he who treats evry1 as the same , who dsnt judge ppl or ridicule them for their shortcomings and who treats evry1 as equals . He ie the one who has understood the secret behind the state of Bliss and the real way of living life .
What i think is , that the purpose of life is to discover God , and being non-judgemental,forgiving,king and compassionate towards all is the 1st step to realizing God .
That's what i think , anyway , even if im no way close to that myself . heh heh
;-) ;-)
