It is their network anything done on their network they can look at and hold you responsible for. If you don't want them to read your emails then don't conduct personal business at work on their computers.

No, it is not against the law. Any and all e-mails sent or received on a company computer are the "property" of that company. For that reason, people should be very careful of what they say in e-mails at work.

Your company email is to be used for company purposes...they have a right to read anything sent through that system (and basically anything you do on your company provided and paid for computer). Most companies have you sign some sort of agreement to that fact.
Basically, if its your company's computer, nothing it's used for is 'personal'.

The e-mail server belongs to the company. They have every right to view all e-mails coming and going through that network. YOU shouldn't be receiving personal e-mail on your company server anyway, it is for business purposes only. You should redirect all personal e-mails to a web based e-mail service and check it on breaks or lunch. Basically, you're stealing the company's time and production potential by answering personal e-mail at work anyway.

Anything you do on a company computer/network is open for the company to view. Any emails you send/recieve whether its your company email system or personal email system, any websites you visit and anything you watch/listen to is open for the company to see. They view it as you are using their property, therefore they have the right to see how their property is being used.

If it is sent through their network, they can view it.
Your regular mail example does not translate to email. The laws regarding federal mail do not apply to email, fedex packages, or anything else not delivered by USPS.

Logic doesnt work in this case, emails over a company LAN or server are their property and they have every right to open, read, print or confront you about them.
