Napoleon's Russian campaign of 1812 was brought on by Russia's refusal to conform to the dictates of the Continental System, which forbade the importation of European goods into Europe
In l810, the Russians withdrew from the Continental System and resumed relations with Great Britain. In June of 1812, Napoleon began his fatal Russian campaign. The invasion of Russia was an attempt to force Tsar Alexander I to submit once again to the terms of a treaty that Napoleon had imposed upon him four years earlier.
