1. Is it old enough and big enough? It has to be over 4" long on the shell length. 6" or more is more likely.
2. Is it female? It can be hard to tell with smaller turtles. Once it is over 4" you can tell by the short front claws, flat or outcurved belly, and short tail with the vent opening near the base.
3. Has it had access to a breeding male in the last several years? Males also have to be of breeding size and age.
4. Is it carrying eggs? When the eggs are well-developed, you can often feel them, then later see them, under the soft tissues around the rear legs and tail. They will be like large, slighly soft marbles.
Now- few home keepers ever get their Red-ears to lay fertile, well-nested eggs indoors. It is just hard to provide the right environment. This is actually good news, because it saves you from the trouble of having to raise and find homes for up to 30 baby turtles.

If you provide a sandy area, or soil, the turtle will do the rest if she is pregnant, remember turtles are egg layers. Normally there will be a weight gain associated with the pregnancy and reduced ability to pull into it's shell. hope this helps!
