Personally, reading is a life skill. Becoming a proficient reader will help anyone in many aspects of their life. For one, reading is exercise for the brain. There's actually been studies that reveal that constant brain stimulation helps minimize the chances of acquiring Alzheimer's. And we're all getting old...Then, creative reading yields independent thinkers. Technical reading yields technical readers. Technical reading is the skill you want to have when signing a lease for an apartment, or a work contract, or a sale contract on a house or a car. Reading the small print, you know? The stuff no one really reads until you're $20,000 in debt. Sharpening and practicing your reading skills will also improve your vocabulary if you take advantage of the opportunity to discover new words. The benefits of reading are endless...and indispensable.

I personally love reading and reading for pleasure has definitely benefited me as a student. Regardless of what you read outside a classroom, it helps to train you on how to read and pick up on the pertinent information quicker, so that when it comes to text books and other readings for school, you will be able to finish reading a chapter or book faster than you might have previously. Also, you will increase your vocabulary, which will help with SAT's, GRE's or any other exams you will be taking as a student. You get a feel for sentence structure and along with the vocabulary, this will allow you to write better and more eloquently in general. The same thing goes with your speech (which could aid you as a student in things like presentations or discussing something in front of a class)

You should definitely pick up a book! :) Its totally worth it. And there are so many genre's out there you will find something that you enjoy.
