I tried to partition and format a used 40gig Seagate barracuda drive using the Windows98 startup disk. The system infomation that came up was that there were only about 300meg on the disk? How did this happen?

Windows 98 does not recognize large hard drives. Download the hard drive formatting tools from seagate.

No Fat32 will not damage a drive. It sounds like to me either there is Data on the Drive or there is bad sectors, Or someone partitioned the drive to only 300MB or whatever they did. If you plan on using this Drive get a Boot disk and repartition the drive with Fdisk and Redo the partition on the drive to use all available space and then format it.
