It could mean anything from somebody is suing you for an amount of money, or they are are just wanting you to give testimony in an action between two other parties. You about need to see the papers to know. If you are being sued over an issue you don't think is fair you may have to counter sue. You need the paperwork and then I would go to a lawyer who offers the first consultation free and ask them to explain what is happening.
If it is a civil suit you will not have to go to jail unless you fail to answer the subpoena and get a contempt citation. Civil suits do not entail jail time.

And yes it is possible they just want you as a witness. I have been subpoenaed several times as a witness. They may even pay you a small fee if that is the case.

i would not go pick them up. I'd make them deliver them for sure. process servers get paid to do this. I do not think that your employer will accept them for you. Our company does not allow service on the property. Once they are accepted, you will have to appear in court and file your answer. If there is a judgement and the other party wins, then you will have to pay the debt or work out payment arrangements.

First of all, you need to read the papers that are being served to you. The other questions cannot be answered because you don't know what it is that you are being sought for.

It means someone is suing you for money for something you did. You most have done something (using too much Limewire?)
As for paying it probably say what they are seeking in the lawsuit but it could be renegotiated in court.
My advice is to call a lawyer pronto and think real hard what you could have done.

You'll find out as soon as you receive the papers. You don't have to pick them up, they deliver for free!

You will have to get and read what the documents say. No one can answer your questions.
