Make work a fun place to be, challenging, engaging, somewhere they look forward to being. Something they can be passionate about and will want to take ownership for. Treat workers with respect. Give praise where it's due so that they want to do a good job. Make them feel like part of a team where everyone gets along and works toward a common goal. Provide incentives for increased productivity (without letting quality suffer).

Low morale, an unpleasant work environment, poor management, a lack of communication or teamwork, resentment, feeling unappreciated, underpaid etc are what lead to low job satisfaction and therefore decreased productivity. When people don't care about the job & don't enjoy it, they have no motivation to be diligent workers.

Of course it also helps if you hire people who are enthusiastic and have a real interest in the field to start with. They are more likely to be hard-working employees than someone with no enthusiasm and no interest in the work, someone who just needs a job & is just doing their time for the paycheck.

I always work more diligently with incentive. It doesn't need to be anything big, maybe an extra half hour for lunch, or get to leave a little early to beat the rush, or even company while on lunch or break. I also find that if my boss is honestly interested in my personal life, and they also share theirs I am more willing to do things they ask me to do (without complaining about it for 15 minutes). A simple "Hi how are the kids?" or "How was the night out with hubby?" can go a long way!

A resounding yes. Person could be diligent if he do his work religiously whatever the field of his endeavour. What requires from a person is to concentrate on his task and instill discipline.

Yes it is possible. You can do this by telling them that you want them to work more diligently, explaining to them what exactly you mean by that and reward them when they do.

Pay them more, work them less. 40 hours a week is too much.
